Newsies is the story of the Newsboy strike of 1899. When the strong and powerful leaders of the publishing companies in New York raise the distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, one newsboy stands against it. Charismatic, Jack Kelly, rallies the other newsies to fight against the oppression. Can these teens change the minds of these powerful leaders of industry?
Performances will be:
Friday August 3rd and 10th at 7:00 pm
Saturday August 4th and 11th at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm
Sunday August 5th and 12th at 2:00 pm
Auditions for Newsies will be held at Abbey Players Theatre on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6. Auditions will start at 9 am both days. On Saturday, we will run until 4 pm. On Sunday we will run until 11 am. We are looking for performers between the ages of 13 and 24. We ask that you prepare a one-minute acapella song (we suggest it is one that is not from the show). We will provide you with a cold reading. After initial auditions we will have callbacks for certain characters. For callbacks we will ask you to learn a small part of a song from the show and do another reading. The first rehearsal will be on May 26. There will be a break and then we start back up again on June 4. We will have a mixed rehearsal schedule of day and night rehearsals.
Jack Kelly: Charismatic leader with a dream to leave the big city and have a small-town life-style.
Katherine Plumber: A strong and independent reporter trying to make her way up in a job that is overrun with men.
Crutchie: an optimistic lovable guy. Even though his leg is messed up, he never lets it get him down
Joseph Pulitzer: A tycoon who does not care about the newsies only about his own pocketbook.
Davey: reluctant at first but becomes crucial to the strike efforts. He is the brains of the operation.
Les: Davey’s fearless younger brother.
Medda Larkin: like a mother figure to Jack. She is the owner of a theatre. She is one of the only adults on the side of the newsies.
Ensemble: This is the most important part of the show. Over 2/3 of the show involves the ensemble. This involves newsies, the bowery beauties, and Pulitzer’s assistants.
