RENAISSANCE CADIENNE
Sat. Dec 8th, 8pm and Sun. Dec. 9th, 2pm 2007 A unique, energetic, award-winning, bi-lingual (French/English) local folklore performance troupe, with its own band, will be performing on Saturday evening, Dec. 8th , 2007 at 8:00pm and on Sunday Dec. 9th, 2007 at 2pm.
The troupe was begun in 1991 and is dedicated to preserving through the arts of music, dance and comedy theatre, the 250-year traditions of the Louisiana Acadians (Cajuns). Most of the fifteen members reside in and around Lafayette. Three of the members live in Abbeville.  Renaissance Cadienne performs locally and in other states and has traveled for over fifteen years to francophone and other countries including France, Belgium, Canada and Ireland to showcase the Cajun culture. Another voyage to France is being planned for the summer of 2008. The December shows will each have two parts with different costumes. The first half will showcase some of the old Cajun songs that have come down from Canada and some dances such as the reel, the contre danse, the bourre, the bastringue, the mazurka, and the schottishche, all of which predate the waltz and two-step so popular today. The costumes of the first half of the show are of the 18th century, similar to what would have been worn by the Acadians as they were driven from Nova Scotia in 1755. The second half of the show invites you to step back in time to a Wedding of 1900, Une Noce de 1900, which could well have been attended by your grandparents and great grandparents. In this musical comedy, you will hear the songs and see the wedding traditions of their day and laugh at the events familiar to many families.  Renaissance Cadienne has engraved three CD's: La Fleur de la Jeunesse, Mon Pere aussi Ma Mere, and Minuit cadien: Noel au Pays des Bayous.
